We as human, our body are maintained in constant temperature which is at approximately 37ºC for optimum organs function. Too high or too low temperature will cause the body to produce series of problems. Therefore, when your body is in abnormal change, it would lead to the state of hypothermia i.e. reduction of body temperature which slow down the metabolism rate. Such occurrence may not be life-threatening, it could arise symptoms such as shivering and mental confusion. Such matter needs immediate attention as the person may collapse if the body temperature is largely varied from optimum temperature.

The most common recommendation to attend such problem is by using hot or cold compresses. However, most of the people do not know hot and cold compresses should be used on what kind of circumstances. Wrong condition of using compresses could cause the opposite effect such as Exacerbation (a state of inflammation or painful reaction to allergy or cell-lining damage) to our health instead of making you feel better.
The following guides will briefly explain the roles of hot and cold compresses.
Hot Compress can be used to increased body temperature, relaxing the walls of nerves and blood vessels, promote blood circulation to higher metabolism rate. It also helps to reduce the symptoms of neuromuscular tension and as well as muscle pain.

Circumstances to apply Hot Compress:-
a) Injury occurred with no wound / with no red patches (i.e. internal bleeding);
b) After Fourty-Eight hours of injury
c) Symptoms such as swelling, heat, pain and inflammation;
d) Sub-acute and chronic symptoms of muscle pain;
e) Physiological contraction of uterine muscle pain;
f) Stuffy nose caused by headaches.
Tips: Do not use the hot compress continuously for more than 30 minutes, it could outcome adverse effect to our body.
Cold Compress can be used to reduce the body temperature, causing vasoconstriction, decreased metabolic rate, slow nerve conduction velocity. It also contains the analgesic effect on inflammation (i.e. relief the inflammatory regions in our body).

Circumstances to apply Cold Compress:-
a) After Twenty-four hours of the injury
b) still in the red, swollen, hot, pain, and acute inflammation.
c) Symptoms of Inflammation: fever, pain, bleeding, sprains, bruises, minor cuts, minor burns, nose bleeding, insect bites, and also high IOP (Intraocular pressure).
Tips: Do not use the time for continuous use for more than 20 minutes as it could outcome adverse effect to our body (i.e. freeze our muscles). You may continuously apply cold compress for an interval of 5 to 10 minutes.
Hot and Cold Compresses can also be used together under certain condition. By applying hot and cold compresses alternatively to regulate the physiological mechanism in our body in order to restore normal operation / functions.

Circumstances to apply Hot and Cold Compresses Alternatively:-
a) Relief Dark circle – After using cold compresses to relieve pressure in the eye, you may apply hot compress on the eye again to promote blood circulation. Such method may help to remove puffiness, fine lines at the eyes and also reduce the probability of myopia progression (Nearsightedness);
b) For muscle fatigue after exercise.
Furthermore, people with heart problems / disease should seek consultation from doctor before you undergo using any compress on yourself. Bear in mind that hot compress produces infrared, it could possibly make the skin turns darker if hot compress applied onto your skin for too long. The dark skin will naturally fade away as long as you suspend the usage of hot compress for some period of time (1 or 2 weeks).
The abovesaid method could be one of the most effective and the simplest way for immediate alleviation of physical discomfort, it also helps to increase body immunity.
