Mythbuster: Consuming More Eggs = More Blood Cholesterol = Bad Health?
It’s time to break this ridiculous myth! Consuming more eggs has been a bad reputation for so long to us. Mentioned that eggs raised blood cholesterol levels, there used to be a studies showed that egg yolk in an egg contains five grams of fat. This eventually made all the people assume that eggs could lead to heart diseases by clogging your arteries, and also they contain high content of dietary cholesterol. Thus, countries such as United States, United Kingdom, the government restricted people to eat less than 3 eggs in a week.
Recently H.E.A.R.T UK took back the “health restriction” advice of consuming less than 3 eggs in a week. Evidence shows that eating a lot of dietary cholesterol does not increase blood cholesterol. According to University of Surrey, one of the famous University of Guildford in UK, the researchers have proved that yolk only gives insignificant effect to our blood cholesterol levels. The study revealed that people who consume two eggs each day with low-fat diets do not show signs of increased blood cholesterol levels. Although most of the high blood cholesterol level’s patient has vital risk of getting Arteriosclerosis, doctors believe that only one third of the blood cholesterol levels came from our eating habits. However, fats, smoking, lacking of exercises, sleeping are the key which cause the increment of blood cholesterol levels. For your info, blood cholesterol is divided into two sub-categories: High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL), and Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL). LDL cholesterol is considered bad because it sticks to artery walls and eventually lead to Arteriosclerosis.
Thus, the statement “consuming more eggs adversely affect our health” is not valid. So what raises blood cholesterol? One of the main theories is that saturated fat does. Of the three types of fat (saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated), saturated fat raises blood cholesterol and LDL levels. Food such as dairy products, cakes, cookies, meats contain high bundles of LDL cholesterol which consequentially lead to heart diseases.
